Always Ask Questions – Stay Curious

Sept 28, 2022 by Tom Hobbs

Why is the best question.

It can be frustrating when a curious four-year-old asks unending ‘why’ questions, but ‘why’ is the path to true understanding. It usually takes 5-why's to get to the root cause of an issue in troubleshooting. But we are conditioned to stop asking ‘why’ after the first one. If you ask too many questions, you are challenging authority. If you ask too few, it is assumed you understand.

Both are dangerous.

If you do not take the time to ask questions for clarity, you will never know the real truth. The net result is you believe the noise around you as fact. Social media voices are unchallenged experts. Charlatans win money away from you without providing valuable clarity. Asking ‘why’ fixes all of that.

As a business owner, it is important to know what information you can trust. There are three sources that provide the best answers for your growth: your customers, yourself, and the market. Asking good questions and following with as many ‘why’s’ as it takes for clarity will give you a strong foundation and a never-ending supply of growth opportunities.

Ask your Customers

There is no better way to improve your business than to ask the people who pay you money for your services. This captive audience is using your product or service to improve a facet of their lives. They touch and feel your impact every day. The value you deliver exceeds their expectations, so they remain customers. What would it take to make the journey more suited to their success?

Here are some questions you can ask your clients:

  • What works for them?

  • What could be better?

  • Is there anything else they would like?

  • Are they getting the value expected?

  • What (product/service) had the greatest impact on them?

Ask Yourself

You are the central part of your business and your life. The success of your company is directly tied to your personal success. This is why it is important for you to interview yourself and make sure you are receiving the support you need to make your life better.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What tasks can I automate?

  • Are the people around me happy?

  • How can I do this better?

  • Does this make me happy?

  • Do I have the energy to move forward?

Ask The Market

Market domination starts with Market understanding. Armed with this knowledge, you can position your company to deliver what the market needs at the right time. One trap companies fall into is building a product line, putting it in the market, getting some success, and failing to iterate changes. Therefore, they are left behind.

This is easily avoided by asking a few questions:

  • What is trending in the market?

  • What does the market need?

  • What are competitors working on?

  • How are economic shifts affecting your industry?

  • What is the forecast for your market penetration?

Ask ‘why’ like a four-year-old to uncover opportunities to make your company stronger. Challenge everything you know. Ask your customers questions about your products and services. Ask yourself how your journey is providing for you. Ask the market what you should build next. Your growth is all around you. Be curious enough to find it.

It is easy to get caught up in the business of making money. But it is more important to make money working in your wheelhouse. You will sell better. You will message better. You will prospect better. You will Utilize Your Time better.
